Gloucester Township Breaks Ground on Jake’s Law Playground at Valleybrook Sports Complex
GLOUCESTER TOWNSHIP, NJ — Today, Gloucester Township officially broke ground on its future Jake’s Law Playground at Valleybrook Sports Complex, a fully inclusive and accessible playground designed for children of all ages and abilities. Mayor David R. Mayer was joined by members of Township Council, 4th Legislative District Legislators, community partners, and families to celebrate this major step forward in creating a space where every child, regardless of ability, can play, connect, and thrive.
The new playground will include sensory-friendly equipment, quiet play areas, shaded seating, accessible travel paths, and a family/assisted-use restroom—all thoughtfully designed to meet the physical, emotional, and cognitive needs of children and caregivers. The space aims to bring people together by fostering interaction and understanding between individuals with and without disabilities.
“Jake’s Law Playground represents what Gloucester Township stands for—community, compassion, and inclusion,” said Mayor David R. Mayer. “We are committed to building spaces that reflect the needs of all our residents, and this project will offer meaningful access to play, healing, and connection for families throughout our community.”
During the groundbreaking, the Township received generous donations from Pennco Tech and the Gloucester Township Field of Dreams organization in support of the playground. Jason Hobyak, Vice President of Pennco Tech, and Chris Ryan, COO, presented a $20,000 check. Maryjo and Frank Dintino, board member and coaches with Field of Dreams, presented a $25,000 donation.
Maryjo Dintino shared her perspective, on the significance of the project: “What makes the GT Field of Dreams so special to me is that it gives every child—regardless of ability—a chance to experience the joy of playing baseball. Every kid deserves that feeling of being part of a team, sharing laughs, and making memories with friends. That’s exactly what happens here at the Field of Dreams. We’re also incredibly proud to be the home of Gloucester Township’s very first special needs playground, thanks in part to the generous grant we received through Jake’s Law. This new inclusive space will be a game changer for children with special needs and their families—creating a safe, welcoming place to play, connect, and thrive. It’s a huge step forward for our community, and we’re honored to help lead the way.”
Gloucester Township was awarded $750,000 from the New Jersey Green Acres Program for the project, which includes $562,500 in grant funding and a $187,500 zero-interest loan. The playground will far exceed the requirements outlined in Jake’s Law legislation, with more than 29% of the playground area covered in shade and all features designed for accessibility.
Construction is set to begin shortly, marking the beginning of a new chapter in the Township’s continued effort to create welcoming spaces where everyone belongs.
