Recycling is the Law

All residents are reminded that recycling is mandatory statewide. By removing recyclables from the regular trash flow, we help save our environment and save tax dollars that would otherwise be spent on trash disposal fees. Read more about single stream recycling.

SINGLE-STREAM RECYCLING GUIDELINES FOR 2025

HOW TO RECYCLE:

Recycling carts are collected every other week at curb side. Use your cart space wisely. Compress and flatten recyclables to maximize cart space. Cardboard must be broken down and placed vertically in cart so that the cart will empty properly. The recycling carts’ lid must be closed in order to be picked up.
NO PLASTICS BAGS. All containers should be empty and rinsed and all recyclables must be kept as dry as possible. If you received a recycling cart, it must be used. Additional recycling material left outside recycling cart will be collected by a different truck. Any oversized cardboard that cannot be broken down (remove bubble wrap, plastic bags & Styrofoam) may be put out for overflow truck.

WHAT TO RECYCLE:

Only recycling items listed below go into the recycling cart/container
GLASS CONTAINERS that were previously used for food or beverages. These containers may be clear, brown or green glass.
METAL CONTAINERS refers to aluminum, tin or bi-metal food and beverage containers.
PLASTIC CONTAINERS that only display the plastic class types #1 & #2 recycling triangle. These containers could have been used for juice, milk, soda and water; no loose lids.
RESIDENTIAL PAPER: refers to newspaper and all of its inserts, catalogs, chipboard (beer & soda cartons), cereal boxes, computer paper, envelopes, gift boxes, greeting cards, junk mail, magazines, office paper, paper toilet/towel rolls, phone books, text books (without hard covers) and work books. Also, all types of flattened- folded in half/cut down corrugated cardboard (put in cart vertically so cart will completely empty).
CARDBOARD in the cart must be flattened and folded in half then placed vertically in the cart, so it will not jam. Additional cardboard may be flattened and taped together in small batches and put off to the side, on the ground and away from the cart. Make sure all the inserts are out of the boxes. Oversize boxes leave empty off to the side and away from the cart as well. A different truck will collect the overflow cardboard.

RECYCLING CONTAINERS:

Multi-family properties that need an additional 96-gallon recycling cart should call the GTGS @ 856-227-5665. Carts are only available through the GTGS. All carts are the property of Gloucester Township and must be left at your house if you move. Recycling carts used for any other purpose other than recycling will be confiscated. Please, do not put any markings on your cart as it is Township property; each cart has an identification number and a RFID tag which will correspond with your address.

The “Recycling Coach” App allows residents to enter their address and receive information about what is recyclable and pick-up dates. Download the free app at the Apple store or Google play.

Single-Stream automation questions:

How should I set my cart out for collection?

  • Carts placed on the curb must be no more than 2 feet from the street.
  • Carts placed in street; wheels should be touching the curb with the exception of homes in cul-de-sacs. Residents in cul-de-sacs should place their cart far enough away from the curb so the trucks’ 12 foot automated collection arm can reach.
  • Handle must be facing towards the house, or the cart cannot be collected.
  • Cart must be at least 5 feet away from & not behind any obstacles such as mailboxes, trash, utility poles, vehicles, yard waste and other carts.
  • Automated collection requires a 15 foot overhead clearance, keep cart away from low hanging trees and wires.
  • Don’t overload your cart, lid must be fully closed.
  • Carts must always be on level ground (no snow or leaf piles).

Can the recycling cart be returned?

  • No, it is the law to recycle so residents may not return the cart.

Can I paint my cart or change my cart lid?

  • No, the carts are Township property and the lid may not be removed.

Can I use a different cart or bucket?

  • No, only recycling carts issued by the Township may be used

Gloucester Township Global Services (GTGS) collects grass clippings WEEKLY on the same day as your regular recycling day. Example: Your recycling day is every other Monday – your clippings will be picked up every Monday.
