POTHOLE REPAIR NOTICE

An important part of road maintenance is the repair of potholes. Potholes are created when moisture seeps into the pavement, freezing, expanding, and then thawing occurs. This weakens the pavement. Traffic loosens the pavement even more, and it eventually crumbles and pops out. Due to the recent severe weather the Township has experienced a high number of potholes that have been reported.

The Township currently has 1-2 trucks working on potholes daily throughout town. Potholes are more difficult to be repaired when filled with water. During cold weather, the repairs will be limited to those determined to be hazardous for motor vehicles. In warmer weather and when hot asphalt mix is available, potholes most likely will be filled with the hot asphalt mix for a more permanent repair. The County is responsible for County roads. The State is responsible for state roads and highways. Please click here to find information on reporting a pothole.

Tips for driving over potholes:

  • Maintain full air pressure in all tires to give as much cushion as possible between the pothole and the rim of the tire.
  • Before swerving around potholes be sure to check surrounding traffic.
  • Beware of standing water that may conceal a deep pothole.
  • If the pothole cannot be avoided, slow down. Hitting a pothole at high speed increases the chance of damage to tires, wheels, shocks, struts and springs.
  • Don’t brake when directly over a pothole. Applying the brakes causes the car’s weight to shift to the front wheel and can increase damage. It’s better to brake before impact and then roll through the pothole at a low speed.
  • When driving over a pothole-filled road, hold the steering wheel firmly to avoid losing control.

REPORTING A POTHOLE:

Call or email Public Works for Gloucester Township roads to report a pothole, or use the form above.

Recycling is the Law

All residents are reminded that recycling is mandatory statewide. By removing recyclables from the regular trash flow, we help save our environment and save tax dollars that would otherwise be spent on trash disposal fees. Read more about single stream recycling.

SINGLE-STREAM RECYCLING GUIDELINES FOR 2026

HOW TO RECYCLE:

Recycling carts are collected every other week at curb side. Use your cart space wisely. Compress and flatten recyclables to maximize cart space. Cardboard must be broken down and placed vertically in cart so that the cart will empty properly. The recycling carts’ lid must be closed to be picked up.
NO PLASTICS BAGS. All containers should be empty and rinsed, and all recyclables must be kept as dry as possible. If you receive a recycling cart, it must be used. Additional recycling material left outside recycling carts will be collected by a different truck. Any oversized cardboard that cannot be broken down (remove bubble wrap, plastic bags & Styrofoam) may be put out for overflow truck.

WHAT TO RECYCLE:

Only recycling items listed below go into the recycling cart/container
GLASS CONTAINERS that were previously used for food or beverages. These containers may be clear, brown or green glass.
METAL CONTAINERS refers to aluminum, tin or bi-metal food and beverage containers.
PLASTIC CONTAINERS that only display the plastic class types #1 & #2 recycling triangle. These containers could have been used for juice, milk, soda and water; no loose lids.
RESIDENTIAL PAPER: refers to newspaper and all of its inserts, catalogs, chipboard (beer & soda cartons), cereal boxes, computer paper, envelopes, gift boxes, greeting cards, junk mail, magazines, office paper, paper toilet/towel rolls, phone books, text books (without hard covers) and work books. Also, all types of flattened- folded in half/cut down corrugated cardboard (put in cart vertically so cart will completely empty).
CARDBOARD in the cart must be flattened and folded in half then placed vertically in the cart, so it will not jam. Additional cardboard may be flattened and taped together in small batches and put off to the side, on the ground and away from the cart. Make sure all the inserts are out of the boxes. Oversize boxes leave empty off to the side and away from the cart as well. A different truck will collect the overflow cardboard.

RECYCLING CONTAINERS:

Multi-family properties that need an additional 96-gallon recycling cart should call GTGS 856-227-5665. Carts are only available through GTGS. All carts are the property of Gloucester Township and must be left at your house if you move. Recycling carts used for any other purpose other than recycling will be confiscated. Please, do not put any markings on your cart as it is Township property; each cart has an identification number and an RFID tag which will correspond with your address.

The “Recycling Coach” App allows residents to enter their address and receive information about what is recyclable and pick-up dates. Download the free app at the Apple store or Google play.

Single-Stream automation questions:

How should I set my cart out for collection?

  • Carts placed on the curb must be no more than 2 feet from the street.
  • Carts placed in street; wheels should be touching the curb with the exception of homes in cul-de-sacs. Residents in cul-de-sacs should place their cart far enough away from the curb so the trucks’ 12 foot automated collection arm can reach.
  • Handle must be facing towards the house, or the cart cannot be collected.
  • Cart must be at least 5 feet away from & not behind any obstacles such as mailboxes, trash, utility poles, vehicles, yard waste and other carts.
  • Automated collection requires a 15 foot overhead clearance, keep cart away from low hanging trees and wires.
  • Don’t overload your cart, lid must be fully closed.
  • Carts must always be on level ground (no snow or leaf piles).

Can the recycling cart be returned?

  • No, it is the law to recycle so residents may not return the cart.

Can I paint my cart or change my cart lid?

  • No, the carts are Township property and the lid may not be removed.

Can I use a different cart or bucket?

  • No, only recycling carts issued by the Township may be used

GRASS CLIPPINGS will be collected as follows:
Gloucester Township Global Services (GTGS) collects grass clippings WEEKLY on the same day as your regular recycling day. Example: Your recycling day is every other Monday – your clippings will be picked up every Monday. Grass clippings can be placed into your old yellow recycling bucket, a two handled container, a compostable brown lawn bag or a trash bag left untied at the curb. Maximum weight for each bag or 2 handle container is 40 pounds. A maximum of 20 bags per week is allowed.

LEAVES will be collected as follows:
Gloucester Township Global Services (GTGS) collects leaves WEEKLY on the same day as your regular recycling day. Example: Your recycling day is every other Friday – your leaves will be picked up every Friday. Leaves can be placed into your old yellow recycling bucket, a two handled container, a compostable brown lawn bag or a trash bag left at the curb.
